It never fails. There is still another claim for another magic nutrient that causes weight loss. This time the connection is between resveratrol and weight loss. Everyone is jumping on the bandwagon because of the increased attention the "French paradox" has been getting in the media the last few years. The French are the Western worlds worst role models when it comes to proper diet. The paradox is: they should be collapsing in the streets from obesity and cardiac arrest but instead live longer and have less cardiovascular disease than most of us. The secret seems to be in the 1-2 glasses of red wine per meal that they drink. The wine contains the natural plant antibiotic resveratrol and other healthful flavonoids. Both of which have strong antioxidant properties. What about the weight loss? SIRT 1 is an enzyme found in mice, rats and dogs and humans. All sorts of animal studies suggest that those on calorie restricted diets live longer and are healthier in general. Calorie restriction seems to activate SIRT 1 which is linked to improved results in a variety of anti-aging areas including obesity. The resveratrol in red wine seems to mimic the benefits of calorie reduction which stimulates the SIRT 1 enzyme. In other words, your body thinks it is getting fewer calories even if it isn't. What scientists think is happening is that red wine is increasing the efficiency of your metabolism which helps break down the fats stored in your body. Because your body uses fats to protect itself from absorbed toxins you are getting rid of them and shedding pounds at the same time. This is one reason why there are other health benefits in addition to weight loss. How much red wine should I drink? Unfortunately, because of the use of pesticides in modern agriculture, the level of both antibiotics and flavonoids in red wines has dropped drastically. In fact you now have to drink an entire bottle to get just one to two mg of resveratrol. What people are doing is using supplements instead. Many of these are limited in their effects for two basic reasons. 1] They use synthetic [cis] instead of natural [trans] sources. 2] They have very low potencies. The highest potencies are around 50% of active ingredients. There are adds and websites selling all sorts of resveratrol supplements of various qualities at different price points. One of the better natural supplements that I found was $35 for one months supply @ 250mg per day. They, along with most others, do not publish their potency figures. You do not need to spend this kind of money nor has anyone proven mega doses will help you. Remember, the average French man or woman does not drink 50-100 bottles of red wine per day. You can get all your antioxidants and flavonoids in a balanced multivitamin package where the nutrients work as a unit. Otherwise your supplements and diet will be out of balance.
